First leisure/shakedown ride!

So I bit the bullet on another 90F July day and took the bimmer out. I didn't get my arms ripped from their sockets, but I did thoroughly enjoy my ride! I even stopped and walked around this little county park I have never noticed before!

The wind was a bit gusty so I wasn't doing anything to wild, but I did notice what might be front wheel bearing noise, hot oil smell, and the engine still makes a terrible racket. I will have to pop open the left-hand head to see what clearances look like.

All in all I will say a glorious weekend. Happy birthday 'Murica!

Be free!!

And...time! Definitely the quickest project I have done, to date. The offending parts of the motorcycle are removed and waiting to be taken to the parts washer.
So far I have discovered the following problems in the disassembly processes:
-O2 sensor not screwed in. It was there but loose.
-final drive pivot bearings were way loose.
-lots of mystery grease found in final drive input cavity. No idea what it is or where it actually came from. I am guessing it was a half assed attempt at "greasing the splines." idiot.
-driveshaft is not phased correctly
-driveshaft is not sliding on the splines at all.
-clutch disc is completely barren where there once were splines.
-transmission input shaft has fuck-all for splines.
-clutch throw-out rod is updated type with felt washer.

SO! My conclusion is that this bike has been apart at least once before and somebody did a shitty job of putting it back together!

I hope some day somebody will not say the same of the work I am about to put into it!

Cheers!

Busy busy busy

Oh so busy!
My birthday over the weekend, Porsche tire problems found, truck tire problem solution found, people visiting, nice weather, BBQ! Wheew!

Lots of truck work to update onto my Expediton portal build thread. Should be interesting actually writing it all down. (Will have to add a link here later.)

Just passing time at fleet farm right now, but only my phone to type on so no updates for a while. :(

Cheers!

"I'm coming home..."

so those of you who follow me on facepalm will now know that the Porsche is back on the ground after nearly two months of me putzing around with the cooling and PCV systems on the poor beast. As of last weekend the car was on the ground and driving. It is not fixed back to 100% but I did drive it to work on Friday as a mini victory dance!

So what remains? I am not completely certain but while running the engine to fill the coolant I did notice that it was breaking up pretty bad at no load high RPM areas. This leads me to believe one of two things:
1) fuel injectors are clogged, dirty, or otherwise not up to par.
2) coil packs are failing, but not enough to set off the light.

I am still getting the max lean-out code via the OBD, which would agree with either of the above eventualities.

I think the first step is to locate an affordable set of coil packs and replace the missing coil pack heat/debris shields. My experience at work with heat soaking vehicles has made me a firm believer in the use of these shields when the coils are so ridiculously close to the exhaust system. The point seems to be highly debated on my online porsche forums about whether to leave the shields in place or remove them to not "hold heat in" and I can tell you with a high degree of certainty that the amount of heat kept out by those shields highly outweighs the amount of heat "held in" by them. just my two cents.

anyway, the search is on for said coil packs, and also in the peripherals have cleaning the injectors on the list.

The porsche 996 injectors are also strangely specific, compared to my experience with BMW injectors. the 12ohm resistance is not impossible to find by not overly typical.

Also the $292/per injector that Pelican parts wants is the most rediculous thing I have seen all day! When you can get one injector cleaned for $20 I don't understand why you would dish out 15x that amount for a new one!? sheesh!

Fat gears!

So I rode the cheapo fat bike a few times while it was freezing cold outside. It is a rediculous workout! The sheer weight of the bike is still hard to handle and makes me doubt the purchase in general but I am staying in it to win it! (Or something)

Upgrade two, as suggested by the internet, is gearing. The BMX gearing that the bike comes with isn't even close to being appropriate for the anticipated use of te bike so I am upgrading!
The black app let is the original 18t piece, and the silver is a shimano nexus 22t piece I bought off Amazon for about $9.

Not sure exactly what this means...

Not sure what that is, but it sure isn't in the right place!

Fun with vintage metal!

I think part of the reason I like playing with bicycles so much is that they remind me of all the toys I had as a kid: I can take them apart and figure out how they work, clean, reassemble and have an even more fun little toy! Not to mention the historical aspects of vintage machines.

Smoke machine #2

Okay, starting on concept 2 tonight. I got some last minute inspiration from a rather brief you tube video here.
The beauty of this concept is having a fan on the unit means you don't need shop air to keep the smoke flowing!

Meyle comes through again!

Now I don't have any proof that the Meyle HD parts I've put on the rally bimmer are any better, but they sure do look the part!
